GOLD GOAST ANY DAY PHILLIP ISLAND

Formal seasons are less apparent in the Gold Coast with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Temperatures are cooler in the hinterland and rural areas the year round, especially in winter.

Here’s some tips from the locals:
• You can get sunburnt even on cloudy days. Treat the sun and surf with respect. Wear sun protection year round, a broad brimmed hat, shirt with collar and sleeves and maximum sun screen to exposed skin.
• While casual is the Gold Coast norm, some golf courses have dress codes so check when booking.
• Gentlemen may need a jacket when fine dining, or enjoying a sophisticated evening at a club or restaurant.
• Pack swim wear year round - winter offers pleasant warm weather during the day.

Sun/Surf Safety
Australian beaches are beautiful. Never underestimate the power of the Pacific Ocean. Always swim between the red and yellow flags in a patrolled beach and heed life guards’ advice. Gold Coast beaches are patrolled by professional life guards and volunteers (weekends). Swimmers must accept responsibility for their own safety. Sun protection is vital – always wear a hat, collared shirt with sleeves, maximum sunblock and avoid the heat of the day 10am – 2pm. There is no nude bathing permitted in Queensland.

Where is the Gold Coast?
• Australia’s Gold Coast is located in the south-east corner of Queensland, Australia - 80km south of State capital Brisbane. The region is 5000sqkm. There is more than 70km of open coastline with white beaches and rolling Pacific Ocean. It is one of Australia’s most ecologically diverse regions with more than 100,000ha of World Heritage Listed rainforest.

Can I visit the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney from the Gold Coast?

Yes, but you’ll have to fly. It is possible to do a one-day scenic flight from the Gold Coast to the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef and return in one day. There are frequent air services to Sydney and other major cities in Australia.

PHILLIP ISLAND

Phillip Island is a 90-minute drive from Melbourne. You can experience Australian wildlife at its best and in its natural habitat with penguins, seals, koalas and birds.

Accomodation

Phillip Island offers visitors a wide range of accommodation to cater for all budgets and tastes. Stay by the beach at a foreshore apartment, help with simple farm chores at a farm stay in the Island’s quiet heartland or retreat to a remote cottage on a hill with boundless views of the cliffs and ocean. Book into excellent bed and breakfast accommodation on offer in country homesteads and cottages. Be pampered at a luxury B&B with fine food or a aromatherapy relaxation massage.

Things to do

Phillip Island is a great destination for getting in or near the ocean. Take a dip at a north facing swimming beach or surf ocean beaches, launch a boat, cast a line or join a local fishing charter.

It is home to a colony of little penguins that make their way from the sea to their burrows every day at dusk, one of Australia’s largest colonies of fur seals, koalas and a large population of mutton birds and migratory waterbirds. Phillip Island has a wide variety of family entertainment including A Maze'N Things, Rhyll Fishing Park,Phillip Island Helicopters, National Vietnam Veterans Museum, Phillip Island Wildlife Park and champ karts, slot cars and tours at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

Or for high-octane excitement and to find out about Phillip Island’s motor racing history visit the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit Visitor Centre.

Or you can go to the Koala Conservation Centre. Here you come face-to-face with koalas dozing in their tree top homes as you wanter along the elevated boardwalk at the center.

Another option is to get across to the beautiful Churchill Island and discover Victoria’s history with a visit to to the historic homestead and gardens.

Either way, you are sure to enjoy every bit of Phillip island.
